Diphtheria: Know the signs and keep mob safe

There has been an increase in diphtheria in some communities. Diphtheria is a serious infection that can make people very unwell if not treated quickly.

What is diphtheria?

Diphtheria is caused by bacteria that can release a toxin (poison) in the body. This can lead to severe illness and complications if not treated early.

Symptoms to look out for

You may have diphtheria if you experience:

  • Skin sores or ulcers that aren’t getting better
  • Sore throat
  • Fever and chills
  • Difficulty swallowing or breathing

How it spreads

Diphtheria can spread through:

  • Coughs and sneezes
  • Skin-to-skin contact with sores
  • Touching contaminated items like towels, clothing or bedding

Why early treatment matters

If left untreated, diphtheria can cause serious complications including damage to the heart and nerves, difficulty breathing, and in severe cases, death.

Prevention

Vaccination is the best way to protect yourself and your family.

  • Make sure children are up to date with immunisations
  • Adults should have regular booster shots
  • Extra boosters may be needed in areas where diphtheria is spreading
