GRAMS had a fantastic day at the Murchison Youth Health and Careers Expo last week to engage with the young people and share our programs and services. The aim of the expo is to encourage youth to engage with local businesses and organisations to learn more about health, employment, training, and education.
Our Health Promotions and TIS team sought to improve youth knowledge on tobacco, alcohol and other drug use, and prevent substance abuse among young people. The team hosted a range of activities to help youth better understand how smoking impacts health and the support available to help people quit. The team also gave away 'smoke-free home' mats to participants.
The Suicide Prevention team promoted their upcoming Mental Health First Aid Training which will provide Aboriginal community members and workers with a nationally accredited certificate.
We also had our Aboriginal Health Worker on the day to talk to the youth about career opportunities in the Aboriginal health industry, such as becoming an Aboriginal Health Worker like himself or an Enrolled Nurse or Registered Nurse. Resources and information were also made available to those who were interested in making their first step into the industry.
GRAMS is proud to be able to support the event which aligns with our vision to improve Aboriginal health and wellbeing in remote communities.
