The GRAMS Health Promotions team travelled to Carnarvon recently to deliver training and support to the Aboriginal Medical Service and evaluate strategies in improving the services and programs aimed at promoting Aboriginal community health and wellbeing.

Health promotion initiatives are designed to educate and inform people on healthy behaviours and empowering individuals to take control over their own health. It also takes a holistic approach in addressing health determinants and focusing on promoting not only physical health but also social, emotional and cultural wellbeing.

Health Promotion Officer David Batty said that the goal is to facilitate the development of new initiatives in the region to help improve the health outcomes of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

“We are looking forward to extending our programs and supporting the Carnarvon team in launching new initiatives in the area to help individuals achieve a safe, healthy and empowered life,” said David.

“Our vision is to raise awareness and improve accessibility to culturally appropriate services to help the community in keeping a strong mind, body and spirit.”

To help make the community aware of any future events and programs, the newly appointed Carnarvon Health Promotions team will be communicating through Radio Mama and social media in order to reach as many people as possible and improve the accessibility of health services.

The team has also started planning their NAIDOC 2020 event to help bring the community together and celebrate the special event in November.

The Health Promotions team is excited to launch new health promotion initiatives and exploring how the Aboriginal Medical Service can continue to deliver valuable health promotion programs to the community going forward.
