The GRAMS TIS team had a deadly day with Deadly Dan promoting ‘World No Tobacco Day 2022’ at Rocks Laneway, Marine Terrace. This year the theme is “Protect Our Environment” which focuses on the environmental impact that smoking is having on our lands, and what people around the world can do to claim their right to health, healthy living, and to protect future generations.

Tobacco is one of the leading contributors to the burden of disease among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Its usage is widespread among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples although smoking rates vary between regions and communities. Overall, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples are almost 3 times more likely to smoke compared to non-Indigenous Australians.

Through the Tackling Indigenous Smoking (TIS) program, we support regional organisations to help Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples:

  • Understand The Impacts Of Smoking
  • Quit Smoking
  • Not Start Smoking

Facts About Cigarettes

  • Cigarette butts are among the most commonly discarded pieces of rubbish globally,
  • Across the globe, around 3.5 million hectares of land are destroyed to grow tobacco each year. Growing tobacco also contributes to the deforestation of 200 000 hectares a year and soil degradation.
  • 5 trillion cigarette butts are not disposed of properly every year across the globe, generating 1.69 billion pounds of toxic waste and releasing thousands of chemicals into the air, water, and soil.

If you do smoke, please do not throw your cigarette butts on the ground, they can be dangerous for your children, pets, and environment.

Do you or someone you know need help to quit smoking? Contact the TIS team or your local AMS.
