Geraldton Regional Aboriginal Medical Service (GRAMS) joined the NAIDOC Week celebrations last week with Geraldton Senior High School to honour this year’s theme – Heal Country! – which calls on everyone to ‘continue to seek greater protections for our lands, our waters, our sacred sites and our cultural heritage from exploitation, destruction, and destruction.’
Our TIS, SEWB and Health Promotions teams organised a range of events and activities at the school to explore the First Nations people’s culture and history with the students.
TIS Officer, Carmel Narrier said it was an opportunity to engage with the students and teach them about health and wellbeing.
“We set up a range of games and activities to help spread messages on smoking, alcohol and drugs to encourage a health, happy and smoke free future for our youth,” said Miss Narrier.
Health Promotions Officer, David Batty said NAIDOC Week shines a light on the importance of culture and art, and its significant impact on mental health.
“Art is an important part to our identity and culture, and we wanted the students to be able to express themselves creatively,” said Mr Batty.
“We provided creative outlets for the students to share their art, thoughts and feelings with their peers.”
“GRAMS collaborated with the students to finish off the U RITE signage which speaks to our Social and Emotional Wellbeing services and our commitment to supporting mental health.”
