Geraldton Regional Aboriginal Medical Service (GRAMS) is launching a photography competition to showcase the 2020 NAIDOC theme of ‘Always Was, Always Will Be’.
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people were Australia’s first explorer and our First Nations people have occupied and cared for this continent for over 65,000 years.
GRAMS hopes to support the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community to stay spiritually and culturally connected to their country. Australia’s rich Indigenous history and culture should be embraced and celebrated.
“We want to empower our community to be proud of who they are and embrace their Indigenous heritage and culture.” - said Deborah Wood, Chief Executive Officer at GRAMS.
The photography competition provides Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders of all ages to showcase what ‘Always Was, Always Will Be’ means to them.
What does being Aboriginal mean to you?
NAIDOC week provides an opportunity to elevate our voices, reflect on our history, celebrate our resilience and move towards a reconciled future. Culture, not colour, is the heart of Aboriginal identity.
Aboriginal people are resilient and proud people, proving the strength of our people and our culture by overcoming hardships and challenges.
This year, we ask you to tell us what being Aboriginal means to you and share your story with us.
How to enter the NAIDOC Photography Competition
Using your phone or digital camera, take a picture to capture the NAIDOC 2020 theme ‘Always Was, Always Will Be’, and what it means to be Aboriginal.
Share a short paragraph with your photo, highlighting the title of the photo and what it means to you.
Winners will be selected from different age groups:
15 years and under
16 to 30 years
31 to 50 years
51 years and over
All photos will be displayed in an exhibition at Geraldton Senior High School. The winners from the exhibition will be invited to the NAIDOC Ball in August where a ‘photo of the year’ will be announced.
