Geraldton Reginal Aboriginal Medical Service (GRAMS) recently participated in the Red Dust Healing program to gain the knowledge and skills to become a Red Dust Healing trainer to strengthen families, workplaces, and communities.

The Red Dust Healing program is written from an Indigenous perspective and targeted at Indigenous men, women and families to address family and community violence, suicide, rejection, addictions, identity and culture, grief and loss and mental health issues.

As part of GRAMS Suicide Prevention strategy, GRAMS aim to equip their staff with the tools required to support and promote positive health outcomes in Indigenous communities.

Red Dust Healing’s ‘Train the Trainer’ program supports selected community and health workers to use the tools with clients and communities in a one-on-one or group setting to deliver the Red Dust Healing program.

The first part of the training requires the participants to confront and deal with their own healing issues before being able to help others with their healing journey.

The participants then go through a training workshop to gain the tools and skills to mentor community members and foster an understanding of identity, develop self-evaluation skills, and improve their physical and spiritual wellbeing.

GRAMS Health Promotions Officer David Batty took part in the training program to gain a better understanding of the path to healing and what he can do to support the process.

“The program offers an innovative approach to support men and women to understand their lives and owning their personal power,” said Mr Batty.

“It gives us the tools to confront and resolve our issues, empowering us to move forward and make better choices for ourselves and our relationships.”

“I look forward to applying what I’ve learned to my daily life and personal relationships as well as helping improve the community health outcomes,” said Mr Batty.

To date, Red Dust Healing has been delivered to over 17,000 people in over 400 communities Australia wide and internationally.

Warramunga man from the Wiradjuri nation and Red Dust Healing founder Tom Powell said the aim of the program is to provide the holistic understanding and empower individuals to make better choices in their lives.

“When the dust has settled on our lives, all we get to keep and take with us is our dignity, our integrity and the love and respect we shared with people” said Mr Powell.

“Red Dust Healing is founded on a cultural belief that we are one people, one mob who do not own but belong to this land.”
